Prepare the connection
An internet speed test measures the path between your device and a test network at a particular moment. It does not directly read the speed configured on your account. Before measuring, pause large downloads, cloud sync and video streams on other devices. Keep the browser tab in the foreground. If you use mobile data, check your allowance before transferring test traffic.
Make a baseline on Ethernet
Connect a capable computer to the router using Ethernet, if possible. Check that the cable and network port support the speed you expect. A 100 Mbps port cannot show the full performance of a gigabit plan. Turn off Wi-Fi on that computer so you know which connection is active, then run the test.
Compare Wi-Fi separately
Next test on Wi-Fi near the router and again from your usual room. Keep the same device and avoid moving during each test. A large drop between rooms suggests coverage or interference rather than a slower service entering your home. Changing devices at the same time makes it harder to identify the cause.
Repeat without cherry-picking
Take three readings with a short pause between runs. Use the middle result as a rough baseline and keep the range. Repeat during the evening and during a quieter period if slowdowns follow a pattern. Record whether a VPN was enabled, because a VPN changes the path and can change the result.
Understand the limits
InternetSpeed Pulse uses browser requests to your selected measurement endpoint. Even a sustained browser test may underestimate very fast links, while server distance, browser behavior and background activity can affect any measurement. Compare with a second independent test if a result seems surprising. Use a repeatable pattern of measurements when discussing a fault with your provider.
A repeatable test record
Record the time, device, Ethernet or Wi-Fi, selected server, Single or Multi mode, VPN status, download, upload and latency. For hypothetical downloads of 82, 94 and 88 Mbps under the same conditions, the middle value is 88 Mbps and the range is 82–94 Mbps. Keep all three rather than reporting only the fastest. Switching servers between runs changes the path being compared.
Put the numbers in context.
Run a baseline test, keep the conditions consistent and compare several results before making a change.
